Spontaneous closure and quick reopening of a full thickness idiopathic macular hole

چکیده
Purpose: To report a quick reopening of a spontaneously closed full thickness macular hole. Design: Case report. Methods: A 68-year-old patient with stage III full thickness idiopathic macular hole in one eye was followed up for thirteen months with fundus photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Results: Twelve days after the first examination, that detected the macular hole, OCT scans revealed the closure of the macular hole associated to the development of a small epiretinal membrane (ERM). One month later, the patient was admitted to the emergency unit, complaining of progressive visual loss over the past three days. OCT examination showed a full-thickness macular hole, very similar to the previously closed, and a progression of the ERM. The patient was submitted to pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling and removal of ERM. Surgical repair resulted in significant functional and anatomic outcome. Conclusion: The reopening of a spontaneously closed macular hole is remarkably uncommon and has been reported previously in two patients. A rigorous follow-up is mandatory, because these macular holes can quickly reopen, as demonstrated in this case report.

Spontaneous closure of stage IV idiopathic full-thickness macular hole and late reopening as a lamellar macular hole: a case report
INTRODUCTION Spontaneous closure of traumatic macular holes is described as a common event in the peer-reviewed literature. However, the spontaneous closure of stage III and IV full-thickness idiopathic macular holes has been reported in less than 15 cases in the literature, this being an extremely rare event, with their reopening being even more infrequent. We report a case of a spontaneous cl...
متن کاملReappraisal of Spontaneous Closure Rate of Idiopathic Full-Thickness Macular Holes
We retrospectively reviewed the records of 142 eyes of 138 patients with idiopathic full-thickness macular hole. Spontaneous closure of idiopathic full-thickness macular hole was observed in five eyes (3.5%) of four patients before the planned vitrectomy. In the era when surgical treatment was not available for macular hole, the rate of spontaneous closure of idiopathic full-thickness macular h...
متن کاملSpontaneous Closure of a Full°Thickness Macular Hole Associated with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy and Persistent Vitreomacular Traction
Diabetic retinopathy worsens the prognosis of macular holes compared to those of idiopathic etiology. While spontaneous closure of idiopathic macular holes is a well-documented phenomenon, spontaneous closure of macular holes associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy is rare. We report a case of spontaneous closure of a macular hole associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy an...
متن کاملSpontaneous Closure of a Full-Thickness Stage 2 Idiopathic Macular Hole without Posterior Vitreous Detachment
OBJECTIVE We report a 50-year-old female patient with a stage 2 idiopathic macular hole that closed spontaneously. METHOD The case is presented on the basis of an observational case report. RESULTS The stage 2 idiopathic macular hole closed spontaneously in 6 weeks with a lamellar defect in the outer retina due to the formation of the bridging retinal tissue, but without any evidence of the...

OBJECTIVES To determine the rate of anatomical closure of idiopathic macular holes undergoing vitreous surgery with respect to preoperative horizontal diameter as determined by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to correlate postoperative visual acuity, duration of symptoms, and late reopening with initial idiopathic macular hole diameter by OCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty eyes of 40 pat...
